The Heart of the Matter: God's Concern
Here's the thing, friends: I don't think God is as concerned with how much money you have as He is with how you manage the amount you do have.
It's not about the number in your bank account—it's about the state of your heart.
When it comes to wealth, there are two crucial questions we need to ask ourselves:
1. How Did You Gain the Wealth?
- Was it through gospel-focused work, a financial blessing, or an inheritance?
- Or did it come through immoral means?
2. What Do You Plan on Doing with It?
- Are you hoarding it for yourself?
- Or are you being a conduit of generosity?
Here's an important truth: being poor or rich isn't a sin in itself. But our financial situation can sometimes be the result of our choices—good or bad.
Poverty Could Be the Result of:
- Drunkenness
- Gluttony
- Gambling
- Addiction
- Sexual immorality
Wealth Can Also Be a Result of Sin:
-
Greed
- Lust
- Envy
- Taking advantage of others
But here's the kicker: wealth can also be a stumbling block. Remember what Jesus said? "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:25). Yikes!
So, can Christians be rich? The answer isn't a simple yes or no. It all comes down to your heart and how you steward what God has given you.
- Am I holding my wealth with open hands?
-
Am I using my resources to further God's Kingdom?
-
Does my wealth draw me closer to God or pull me away?
- God values faithfulness, not financial status
-
You can be rich in faith and good works
-
Contentment is greater than riches (1 Timothy 6:6)
Here's the bottom line, friends: Whether you have a little or a lot, what matters most is how you steward it. Are you using your resources—big or small—to honor God and serve others?
Remember, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). Let's make sure our hearts are in the right place!
- Examine your heart: Are you content with what God has given you?
- Look at your spending: Does it reflect Kingdom values?
- Pray for wisdom: Ask God to help you steward your resources well
Next: Write down these questions in your journal and answer them with an honest heart.
- Is it a sin to be rich as a Christian?
- How can wealthy Christians honor God with their money?
- What does the Bible say about accumulating wealth?
Commit to being faithful stewards, no matter our financial status. Remember, it's not about how much you have, but about how you use what God has given you.
